Services

Heavy-Duty Spindle and Axle-End Services

Based in Calgary, with scheduled mobile service across Alberta. Specialized spindle replacement, axle repair, spider plate replacement and wheel-end work for commercial trucks and trailers.

Service

Truck Spindle Replacement

Truck spindle replacement involves removing the damaged spindle section from the axle end and installing a correctly matched replacement spindle. The work includes preparing the axle tube, completing the weld procedure and machining or finishing the components as the application requires.

Every truck axle is inspected before any replacement work is quoted or started. Suitability depends on the condition of the remaining axle, where the damage is located, the measurements taken at the axle end and how the unit is used in service.

Common signs of damage

  • Wheel-end heat discolouration or blued metal at the spindle
  • A spun bearing or bearing race turning on the spindle journal
  • Spun or seized bearings at the wheel end
  • Scored or grooved seal surfaces causing repeat oil leaks
  • Visible wear, taper or step wear on the bearing journals
  • Impact damage from a curb strike, collision or road debris

What technicians inspect

  • Spindle journal diameters, taper and surface condition
  • Spindle nut and hardware fit at the axle end
  • Axle tube condition, straightness and prior repairs
  • Bearings, cups, seals, hub and brake components at that wheel end
  • The original axle application

What to send us

  • Year, make and model of the truck
  • Axle manufacturer and axle capacity if known
  • Which spindle position is affected
  • Clear photographs of the axle end, spindle and hub
  • Bearing numbers or hub configuration if available
  • Where the unit is located and whether it can be moved

Not every damaged spindle can be repaired. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement of the axle — never from a description or photograph alone.

Service

Trailer Spindle Replacement

Trailer spindle replacement covers semi-trailers, commercial trailers and other towed equipment where the axle end has been damaged but the remaining axle assembly may still be serviceable. The damaged spindle section is removed, the tube is prepared, and a replacement spindle matched to the axle series and application is aligned and welded into position.

Trailer axles are built in several spindle series and configurations, so accurate measurements are essential. The correct replacement is confirmed after inspection, not before.

Common signs of damage

  • Wheel-end failure or a wheel-off event on the trailer
  • Overheated hub, smoking wheel end or seized bearings
  • A spindle nut or retaining hardware that will not seat correctly
  • Repeated oil or grease loss from the same wheel end
  • Bearing journals worn undersize or out of round
  • Damage from a curb, dock or road obstruction

What technicians inspect

  • Spindle series and configuration at the affected axle end
  • Journal measurements and seal surface condition
  • Axle tube for straightness, cracking and previous repair work
  • Brake spider, drum, hub, bearings and seals
  • Condition of the opposite wheel end for comparison

What to send us

  • Trailer year, make and model
  • Axle manufacturer and series if known
  • Which axle and which side is affected
  • Photographs of the damaged spindle and surrounding components
  • Whether the trailer is loaded and where it is parked

Not every damaged spindle can be repaired. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement of the axle — never from a description or photograph alone.

Service

Trailer Spider Plate Replacement

The brake spider carries the brake shoes, anchor pins and camshaft support at the wheel end. When the spider is worn, cracked or damaged by a wheel-end failure, brake performance and component life are affected even after new brake parts are installed.

Replacement spider plates are supplied in 4707 and 4710 brake configurations for compatible commercial trailer axles. The correct plate is confirmed by inspecting the existing brake setup, the S-cam configuration and the axle-tube measurements — never by the axle-tube diameter alone.

Common signs of damage

  • Elongated or worn anchor pin bores
  • Cracks around the spider mounting or camshaft area
  • Brake shoes that will not sit square on the anchors
  • Damage following a wheel-end fire or bearing failure
  • Uneven or rapid brake lining wear at one wheel end

What technicians inspect

  • Spider plate condition, bore wear and crack indications
  • Anchor pins, bushings and camshaft support
  • Brake shoes, linings, drums and hardware
  • Spindle and axle-end condition behind the spider

What to send us

  • Axle manufacturer and brake size
  • Brake configuration if known (4707 or 4710)
  • Axle-tube outside diameter if measured (commonly 5 inch or 5¾ inch)
  • Photographs of the brake assembly and spider mounting
  • Unit type, year, make and model

Not every damaged spindle can be repaired. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement of the axle — never from a description or photograph alone.

Service

Full Axle Replacement

Spindle replacement is not always the right answer. When the axle tube is bent or damaged, camber is outside specification, or mounting surfaces are no longer serviceable, replacement may be safer and more economical than spindle-only repair.

The inspection determines the direction. Measurements, damage location, prior repair history and the application all factor into the recommendation, and the reasoning is explained before any work is scheduled.

Common signs of damage

  • Bent or twisted axle tube
  • Cracking at the axle tube, spindle seat or weld areas
  • Damage at more than one wheel end on the same axle
  • Uneven tire wear that persists after other repairs
  • Previous repairs that are no longer serviceable

What technicians inspect

  • Axle tube straightness, and camber and toe measurements
  • Both wheel ends, spindles and brake mounting surfaces
  • Suspension mounting points and axle seat condition
  • Axle rating and how the unit is used in service

What to send us

  • Unit year, make and model and unit or fleet number
  • Axle manufacturer, rating and track dimension if known
  • Photographs of the full axle from several angles
  • Suspension type and brake configuration
  • Unit location and access details

Not every damaged spindle can be repaired. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement of the axle — never from a description or photograph alone.

Service

Repair Shop Services

Many repair facilities handle everything on a commercial unit except specialized spindle work. Northwest Axle Spindle supports those shops directly, either at their facility or by taking in the axle so their bays keep moving.

Shop customers receive the same inspection process, measurements and component selection used on direct work, along with a clear explanation of what was found and what was done.

Common signs of damage

  • A customer unit in your bay with a failed wheel end
  • Spindle damage found during a brake or bearing job
  • An axle assembly removed and waiting on specialized repair
  • Uncertainty about whether a spindle can be replaced

What technicians inspect

  • Spindle journals and seal surfaces
  • Axle tube condition and any previous repair work
  • Brake spider, hub, drum and bearing condition
  • Measurements required to select the correct components

What to send us

  • Your shop name, contact and work order reference
  • Unit details and axle information you already have
  • Photographs and any measurements already taken
  • Whether the axle is in the unit or removed

Not every damaged spindle can be repaired. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement of the axle — never from a description or photograph alone.

Service

Mobile Services

Mobile service brings the inspection and, where conditions allow, the repair to the unit. That can mean a fleet yard, a repair facility, a dealership, a customer site or a breakdown location within the service area.

Mobile work requires a safe, level and accessible work area. What can be completed on site depends on the repair required, weather, site safety, travel distance and technician availability. When on-site work is not appropriate, the assessment still tells you exactly what the unit needs.

Common signs of damage

  • A unit that cannot safely be moved or towed
  • A wheel-end failure in a yard or at a customer site
  • A fleet unit that would lose a day travelling to a shop
  • Planned axle work scheduled around your operation

What technicians inspect

  • Site conditions, ground surface and safe access
  • Spindle, axle end and wheel-end component condition
  • Whether the repair can be completed on site or in a shop
  • Related bearings, seals, hubs and brake components

What to send us

  • Exact unit location and site access details
  • Whether the unit is loaded
  • Photographs of the damage and the surrounding work area
  • Unit and axle details, and your preferred service date

Not every damaged spindle can be repaired. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement of the axle — never from a description or photograph alone.
