FAQ

Common Questions About Spindle and Axle Work

Practical answers for fleet managers, owner-operators and repair facilities weighing a spindle repair against a complete axle replacement.

Can a damaged spindle be replaced without replacing the complete axle?

In many cases, yes. When the axle tube and the rest of the assembly are still serviceable, replacing the damaged spindle can be an alternative to replacing the complete axle. That decision is only made after the axle is inspected and measured — damage location, tube condition and the application all matter.

Do you work on both trucks and trailers?

Yes. Northwest Axle Spindle services axle ends on heavy-duty and commercial trucks as well as semi-trailers and commercial trailers, including fleet units, owner-operator equipment and units brought in by other repair facilities.

Do you provide mobile spindle repair?

Mobile service is available for many jobs at fleet yards, repair shops, dealerships, customer facilities and breakdown locations. On-site work requires a safe, level and accessible area, and availability depends on the repair required, weather, site safety, travel distance and technician availability.

What information is required for an estimate?

Send the unit type, year, make and model, the axle manufacturer if known, which spindle position is affected, a description of the damage, clear photographs and the location of the unit. Bearing numbers and hub details help when they are available.

Can every damaged spindle be repaired?

No. Some axles are damaged beyond what a spindle replacement can safely address, and in those cases full axle replacement is recommended instead. Repairability is determined after inspection and measurement, never from a photograph alone.

Do you replace spider plates?

Yes. Replacement spider plates are available in 4707 and 4710 brake configurations for compatible commercial trailer axles, along with related anchor pins, bushings and brake hardware as required. The brake configuration and the axle-tube outside diameter are two separate fitment requirements — a 5-inch or 5¾-inch axle tube does not determine whether the brakes use a 4707 or 4710 configuration, so the brake setup, S-cam configuration and axle-tube measurements are all inspected before the part is confirmed.

Do you replace suspension hanger bushing rings?

Yes. Northwest Axle Spindle inspects and replaces worn suspension hanger bushing rings in compatible Hendrickson suspension systems, including RS, HT, HLA and select HTR and Hybrid systems, and in compatible Holland and applicable SAF INTRA and SAF MODUL systems. Hendrickson rings come in narrow and wide configurations, and the correct component is confirmed from the suspension model, existing bushing kit, ring dimensions and current component numbers before anything is ordered or installed.

How do I know if a suspension bushing ring needs replacing?

Excessive suspension movement, vibration or noise, uneven tire wear, axle misalignment, uneven load distribution and visible deterioration around the hanger pivot all warrant an inspection. The suspension bushing and hanger bushing ring work together, so when one is worn both are inspected and replacement together may be recommended.

Can you inspect a wheel end before deciding on a repair?

Yes. Inspection and measurement come first on every job. The findings determine whether spindle replacement, component replacement or full axle replacement is the correct direction, and the reasoning is explained before work is scheduled.

What areas do you service?

Calgary is our primary base. From there we provide scheduled mobile service to the listed Calgary-area, Southern Alberta, Eastern Alberta, Western Alberta and Northern Alberta / Red Deer Corridor locations. Coverage outside Calgary is planned in advance and is subject to travel planning, distance and technician availability.

Do you support fleets and repair shops?

Yes. Fleets, transportation companies, dealerships and repair facilities use Northwest Axle Spindle for specialized spindle and axle-end work, either on site or by sending the axle in, including subcontracted work for shops that do not perform spindle replacement in house.

How do you determine the correct spindle?

Component selection is based on axle measurements, bearing numbers, hub configuration, spindle style and the original axle application. Those details are confirmed at the unit before any replacement component is ordered or installed.

Can you inspect the bearings, hubs and brakes during the repair?

Yes. Related axle-end components are inspected as part of the work, because a spindle failure usually affects the bearings, seals, hub and brake components at that wheel end. Anything found is reported before additional work proceeds.

Do you manufacture replacement spindles?

No. Northwest Axle Spindle is a service and installation company. Replacement components are sourced from professional suppliers, including Axle Spindle Inc., and are selected to suit the axle and the application.

Do you manufacture complete axles?

No. Northwest Axle Spindle does not manufacture complete axles in-house. When a full axle replacement is required, the damaged axle is removed and the correct replacement is installed. If the required axle is unavailable as a standard replacement, we can coordinate having it manufactured to the confirmed measurements and specifications by a trusted vendor. All measurements, capacity requirements and fitment details are confirmed before an axle is ordered or manufactured, and vendor availability and production lead times may apply.

What are your hours?

Shop hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Emergency roadside assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 825-883-5430. The repair shop itself is not open 24/7 — only roadside service is.

Need a spindle assessed?

Send your unit details, axle information and photographs. A technician reviews every request before anything is scheduled.
